2014 Canadian Truck King Challenge
It’s easy to say that Canadians love their trucks, perhaps more so than our neighbors down south. We even have our own Canadian Truck King Challenge where major light- and heavy-duty trucks are put to the test through a variety of conditions. All of us at Knight Dodge in Swift current, SK are pleased to announce that, in this year’s seventh annual Canadian Truck King Challenge, Ram won each of the major categories with the 2014 Ram 1500, 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, and the Ram 2500.
What is the Canadian Truck King Challenge?
The Canadian Truck King Challenge is an independent contest presided over by Canadian truck reviewers and journalists. There are no biases, no sponsorships, or outside input. Each truck gets driven by every reviewer under a variety of conditions over the course of four days. The winners are determined based on individual opinions as well as exact data gathered during the tests. There are three major “events” the trucks endure, and the Ram was named the overall 2014 Truck King winner.
Challenge One: the On-Road Circuit
The first part of the challenge is performed on a 19-km test loop in Ontario where the trucks traverse gravel roads, choppy asphalt, and a smooth-road section. The five trucks were driven just by themselves, carrying a payload of 1,000 pounds of patio stones, and pulling a 6,000-pound trailer. The 2014 Ram 1500 and 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel impressed judges in these tests for their strength, power, and fuel economy.
Challenge Two: Going Off Road
Navigating the job site isn’t always a piece of cake. Other times, drivers also like to take their pickups out for some off-roading fun. The Canadian Truck King Challenge features a tough off-road course that simulates situations drivers may actually find themselves in. Trucks go through rocky terrain, muddy hills, a water-filled trench, and even an obstacle that sends the truck’s wheels up off the ground. The judges were most impressed by the Ram’s class-exclusive link coil suspension and high clearance, allowing it to tackle all the obstacles with ease.
Challenge Three: Heavy Duty
The final exhibition is for heavy-duty trucks. HD models are primarily used to tow, and this test put trucks like the 2014 Ram 2500 to the test. All trucks were given a fifth-wheel connection in order to tow a 14,000-pound RV trailer across a 300-km route. On the second day of testing, they were loaded up with 3,000 pounds of shingles and drove through a 200-km route.
Ram was the clear winner across the board, taking the top spot in all three major categories:
- Light Duty Trucks Under $25,000 – The 2014 Ram 1500 won the first category with the help of its 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and impressive efficiency.
- Light Duty Trucks Over $45,000 – The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel won this category by delivering a mix of fuel economy and performance not found on other trucks.
- Heavy Duty – The 2014 Ram 2500, the best-selling heavy-duty truck in Canada, won the heavy-duty competition with the help of its Cummins turbodiesel engine. The other trucks just weren’t a match when it comes to heavy-duty payload and towing.
