For those of us who are always ready for a new adventure, especially one that goes off of the beaten path, off-roading vehicles are a great asset. Many of the Jeep vehicles that we know, love, and trust to allow us the off-roading experience we enjoy incorporate a multitude of technologies that work behind the scenes to keep the vehicle safe, steady, and easy to handle. Learn more about these technologies and why they’re so important below.

How 4×4 Technology Works

Four-wheel drivetrains can seem like an intimidating thing to understand, and most people don’t try to and just trust that their vehicle will be able to handle the expeditions they plan to embark on. However, knowing the ins and outs of 4×4 technology can help you pick a better vehicle to suit your needs and let you know what kinds of power your vehicle has.

Simply put, 4×4 technology is built specifically to equip vehicles with added traction and better handling and control so that vehicles like the Jeep Grand Cherokee are able to perform at the top of their game each and every time. There has a total of 13 different specialized off-roading 4×4 technologies that are suited for all sorts of intensity levels, just a couple of the most common of these technologies are:

2016 Jeep Wrangler RedCommand Trac 4×4 – This particular system is featured on vehicles like the Wrangler is configured to split torque equally, provide flat towing, and easily shift from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive when it senses the need.

Quadra Drive II 4×4 – This system can be found on the Jeep Grand Cherokee and other high-powered off-roading vehicles. It equips the vehicles with Selec-Terrain Traction Management and rear electronic slip differential to prepare the vehicle to handle all terrains.

Active Drive I – This system is more conservative and fuel-conscious than some other systems and only switches the vehicle into 4×4 when needed in order to reduce fuel-consumption. However, vehicles with this system, like the Cherokee are still tough enough to handle all terrains since they are also equipped with Selec-Terrain.

  • Active Drive Low – This system is exactly what it sounds like, it provides vehicles like the Renegade Trailhawk with low range modes and an added Rock mode in addition to Sport, Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud.
